Doodle 101 / Bullseye Focus

Before there was “Jesus Calling” there was Oswald…

I was introduced to “My Utmost for His Highest” almost 20 years ago. It is a beautifully written devotional that was first published in 1935.

Biddy Chambers, Oswald’s wife, took on the incredible task of  transcribing her husband’s sermons and lectures in shorthand, and then typed them…creating a daily reading…often from 2-3 different messages.  It took her 3 years to complete the book.

“My Utmost for His Highest” was published 18 years after Oswald’s death.

“Whatsoever ye shalt ask in My name, that I will do.” -John 14:13

How sweet that the Lord has drawn me to this passage of scripture at such a time as this.

I continue to feel a wave of emotions as I take each step forward, missing my Mom.

But look at what the Lord spoke to me today as He led me here through Oswald Chambers

(John 14:1-14)

1“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God;a believe also in me. 2In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4And you know the way to where I am going.” 5Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7If you had known me, you would have known my Father also.d From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

8Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.

12“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

“The Disciple who abides in Jesus IS the WILL of God…his choices are God’s choices” (O.Chambers)

When our heart aligns with our Lord’s heart, His desires become our desires.

“Mysterious”…Oswald says, and I agree!

“Logically contradictory and absurd? Yes, but a glorious truth to a saint.”

-Oswald Chambers

Lord, cause my heart to yearn for a “Bullseye Focus”…set my eyes on you…not just for 1 minute of 60…but every moment.  Grow my desire to ABIDE in you.

I know then, that much fruit will be the result…for Your Glory.

  1. Bless your heart, Sue. I have been there and am with you today. All these earthly things wean us from this world, so we can trust in him.

  2. I love OC and have read his devotional for over 20 years…every morning…it still is new and relevant! I found his devotional in journal form and starting in January 2017 (I will be 60) I plan on journaling in it each morning. Thanks for this bull’s eye…I can’t wait to use it!

      1. I found the OC journal at an out of stock book store…I am not sure if there is a current one available. I just started doing artwork in my Inspire bible and also have an old copy of the MESSAGE that I am doing artwork in…I love bible journaling!

  3. Dear Sue. You have been such a giving and inspirational person to me even though we’ve never met. Please know that I continue to pray for you, for “the peace that passes all understanding” and that The Holy Spirit may comfort you today and everyday in a tangible way.
    In Christ alone,
