Living an ART filled life…“Creativity is a God-given ability to take something ordinary and make it into something special. It is an openness to doing old things new ways…The creative spirit is part of our heritage as children of the One who created all things. And nurturing our creativity is part of our responsibility as stewards of God’s good gifts.” – Emilie Barnes, The Spirit of Loveline
Last night I taught a Christmas canvas class with a very special group of women who planned this fun night out to celebrate their friend’s birthday! Many had never created a mixed media project…and I was soooo impressed by all their efforts!
BEAUTIFUL GIRLS, BEAUTIFUL ART
While learning some fun mixed media techniques, the celebration included yummy food and desserts…and I think there may have been a few glasses of wine:)
Christmas is my favorite time of year! Celebrating the birth of our Savior…knowing that our Lord came so that we might live, that He would rather die than be without us. What an IMMEASURABLE LOVE.
Our church is on a journey together to find Balance…mind, body and soul…as we study The Daniel Plan.
Taking our lead from Daniel, we are striving to lean into God as we practice obedience
-by taking care of our bodies (they are His temple) as well as renewing our minds
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”Romans 12:2 (NLT)
and actively operating in the Spirit which breathes life in us, rewarding us with love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self control:)
Maintaining balance is a daily struggle, but one that God provides the means for…the hope for…the VICTORY over…
I haven’t pulled out my watercolors for some time, and I quite forgot how much they are my favorite medium.
My first little project is related to my son’s school show. He started performing in Musical theater at the age of 8, and since then, I have hoped that one day he would have the opportunity to play the role of Seymour in “Little Shop of Horrors” a dark musical comedy. There is so much of Seymour in my son:)
So, now…in his Senior year…he has been cast…Seymour Krelborn.
Not only do they look alike, but…well…Matthew has always been a Krelborn:)
Back to watercolor…
I pulled them out and came up with this:)
The story is about a sweet florist shop worker who gets persuaded by an evil alien plant, to succumb to greed and desire….light hearted musical theater right?
I don’t often have time to sit for hours and paint…I love it when I do!
As she spent time with Clyde, she realized that he had some serious medical problems.
Bonnie and Clyde
It isn’t known for sure, but it appeared that he had experienced some major trauma, (maybe hit by car) and suffers from spinal and hip injuries. I call him the dog with “no bones” because he moves and “plops” like a bowl of jello.
After receiving testing including an MRI (all thanks to Adore-a-Bull), it was determined that this little guy needed some major surgery.
He is such a lovable fellow…never complains…he is sweet, affectionate, & content, even though he must be in pain.
Clyde has been a frequent visitor at my house upon my request. He is such a cuddler and his disposition is contagious!
To know Clyde is to love him:)
So…anyway… due to the non profit organization Adore-a Bull, Clyde was recently able to have corrective surgery…
a very rare procedure for a dog.
Kris was able to bring him back to her home this week for a long recovery. When Clyde has healed, he will be ready for adoption.
You Can see his stitches above and below
Adore-a-Bull, here in Cincinnati, is hosting a fun Alumni Event that will also be raising money for their cause…
…including Irresistible Clyde.
This is their mission statement:
Our Mission: Our mission to save pit bulls begins with rescue of the neglected, abused, and misunderstood. Through our caring fosters we nurture and rehabilitate. Through our voice we educate and change minds. Through our work we match companions to families. Our mission will never end.
Kris asked me if I might help by creating some artwork to be used in a raffle for this upcoming Alumni event.
Here are a few of my first projects
This piece (which will be framed) was inspired by the artist Dean Russo
With pencil, I first drew the outline of Clyde on watercolor paper. Then using watercolor, I filled him in, and then cut him out.
Next, I prepared the background…
Using a piece of Black card stock, I first stenciled the background with white paint, and then, once dry, I used the same stencil with blue spray ink. (Using the white paint first, allowed the spray ink to show better on the black paper)
After spraying the ink through the stencil, (before lifting the stencil up) I rolled a paper towel roll over it to better avoid “bleeding” under the stencil…it gave the design a texture that I like:)
I just received the most generous package of stencils from TCW! There are sooooo many new designs to choose from! And seriously people…TCW stencils are the most affordable stencils out there, and with so many designs to choose from they are a must have!
I did not always cover the card stock with gesso, which at times you would want to do in order to prevent the embossing ink from getting “soaked up” into the paper.
For some of the pieces you’ll see below, I did use gesso before I stenciled with the embossing ink. You will see the results give a more “filled in” finished look. Because the gesso provides a “barrier” to the porous paper underneath, more of the ink “pools” on top (instead of soaking into the paper) of the page allowing the UTEE to “stick” more fully.
For some of these background pages, I wanted the embossing powder to be more “spotty”, so I skipped the layer of gesso. You can see above that the UTEE stuck a bit randomly…this is what I was going for:)Next, I mixed the Lindy’s Stamp Gang Magicals (Industrial Chic) with a little warm water, right in the lid. I “washed” this over the stenciled image with a brush.
Remember when I mentioned using gesso on some of the card stock first? The image top right and lower left are examples of this. I especially love the stencil used for the lower left, TCW 474 Hand Drawn Frames …I have SO many ideas for this one!
Wouldn’t it be fun to write or stamp sentiments in each frame?! Love it!
I wanted to have PLENTY of fun texture on this piece, so I decided to use some products from The Canvas Corp
For our 30th wedding anniversary, my husband & I decided to travel back to Italy…
not only to see the Amalfi Coast but also to visit Carmen.
We brought along some of our close friends…it was a trip of a lifetime!
During our first stay at Oasi (almost 3 years ago), I fell in love all over again with Italy, and to my surprise, found a friend.
During the the past year, Carmen lost her Papa to cancer…He meant more to her than words can express.
My heart has ached for her, and the only thing I knew to do was to create a piece of art that expressed their love for each other…words seem to fall so short.
Below is what I made for her…in hopes that she would understand the depth of empathy I have for her and the great appreciation I feel for the beautiful relationship she has with her Father…something to cherish…forever.
I pray each day that God will heal and mend her broken heart.
(Egli guarisce il cuore rotto e fascia le loro ferite. Salmo 147:3)
These are photos taken from her first communion. Their love is so sweet.
What a blessing to know the love of your earthly Father (so many never do)
…even more so to know the love of your Heavenly Father
